Has there ever been a book that you’ve tried to read, but couldn’t? So you put it down, and then maybe days, months or even years later you come back to it and try again. Some how though, you still can’t finish it!
This is me with Charles Dickens Great Expectations. I first started on the 14th March, 2001 and have since made two attempts to finish the book. Each attempt got me further through the book, but still not even half way.
Someone told me a long time ago, that I would have to slog through the first eighty pages until it gets good. I kept asking myself “Why must I torture myself for the first eighty pages, does the author really need said pages?” Yeah, well I clearly never got far enough into it to find out if it ever gets good. So it sits there on my bookshelf mocking me- telling me that I simply couldn’t do what millions have achieved with relative ease.
Part of me doesn’t care that I haven’t finished it. There’s a small part that wants to complete it – but can’t quite make myself open the book. So until then, Mr. Dickens and I shall remain mere acquaintances.
What’s a book you’ve finished? Do you want to finish it?
She is currently writing her first novel, a contemporary women’s fiction/romance set in a small country town.

I know exactly what you mean, every year I also get stuck on a Dickens: 'Bleak House'. It always starts so well, and I get that flash of "I'm really gonna do it this time!" excitement, but there are too many characters introduced too quickly and then I get lost and…yes, bored.
Hypocritical therefore, but I really recommend slugging on with GE if you can! Look out for the clock references, it will keep it interesting!
I really liked "Great Expectations" and I read it twice. The second time I liked it even more because I was in college (as opposed to secondary school for the first time) and I was able to understand it better. I think it's one of my favorite by Dickens.
But sometimes I have my problems with the classics. For instance, I was never able to finish reading Hemingway's "For Whom the Bell Tolls". I don't think I'll even try a second time. 🙂

Thanks for dropping by Lise! Since I've never finished GE, I doubt I'll get to 'Bleak House', but thanks for encouraging with me GE, maybe…one day… 🙂
But the last time I started GE, I got further than the previous attempt and was also filled with the "Wow, I'm going to do this!" and then about 5 pages later I put the book down!
Thanks for dropping by! 🙂
Hi Oana, thanks for stopping by and commenting! 🙂 All this encouragement to finish GE…oh my, what am I going to do?! :)I'm so glad you all liked it!
I've never read anything but a Hemingway short story, so I can't really comment on his books. But maybe we should all give our "hard" books another go! 🙂
I don't know… The truth is there are so many books to read, that when I come across a book I cannot finish, it's difficult to motivate myself to try again and again. 🙂 But, who knows, maybe I'll go back to Hemingway one day.
I totally agree Oana! It's hard when the pile of other books to read is high and very tempting! 🙂
